DeKalb County Churches to Open Exercise Facilities to the Public

DeKalb County Churches to Open Exercise Facilities to the Public

Working Together to Create a Healthier DeKalb

Decatur, GA.  Was one of your New Year’s Resolutions to get more exercise?  To help you keep on track, three south DeKalb Churches will begin offering free classes and open gym times.   The churches — Stronghold Christian Church, Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, and Bethesda Cathedral — are each opening their indoor exercise facilities to the public.

Lithonia’s Stronghold Christian Church will kick off its program “Fit 4 Life” this Saturday, January 16thwith a Zumba class.  The classes will take place every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  There are two levels of Zumba, one for seniors and one that’s more rigorous.  In addition, the gym and weight room will be open to the public Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (with the exception of Jan. 18th).   Everyone is invited to check out the Zumba class and the facilities.

Memorial Drive Presbyterian plans to open its doors in February.  A number of activities will be offered, including table tennis, ping pong, dodge ball, and basketball.   Bethesda Cathedral will open their doors soon.  All activities offered under this initiative will be free and are available for people of all ages.

In DeKalb County, over 30 percent of adults and 15 percent of high school students are overweight, which can be a precursor to other chronic illnesses, including diabetes and heart disease.   Creating access to recreational spaces in communities that have limited facilities can help reduce these numbers.  “This partnership is yet another great way for us to make being active easier for our residents, particularly during the winter,” states Dr. S. Elizabeth Ford, M.D., M.B.A., district health director of the DeKalb County Board of Health.
