DECATUR, Ga. –If this week’s arctic blast didn’t deliver a chilling reminder of things to come, you were either in a warm and cozy place or weren’t paying attention.
As attention now shifts to Thanksgiving and Christmas preparations, there’s often an overlooked item on the checklist – protecting yourself again influenza, COVID and other respiratory illnesses, which typically see an uptick during the fall and winter months, especially during the holidays.
“While many of us look forward to passing the turkey, gravy and our favorite sides, with many gathering and being in close contact during holiday celebrations, the chances increase substantially for passing a respiratory illness, along with that side of mashed potatoes, being handled by a relative from out of town,” said DeKalb Public Health Interim District Health Director and CEO Dr. Lynn A. Paxton. “Before you gather, make sure you lather your hands with soap and warm water, as well as consider getting your updated COVID and/or flu shot.”
DeKalb Public Health makes it even easier to take care of your holiday preventative healthcare needs. One of its four regional health centers, located throughout DeKalb County, is now open at 7:00 a.m. or stays open until 7:30 p.m., one day of the week (Monday through Thursday), and Fridays until
2:30 p.m., excluding holidays recognized by the State of Georgia. For specific hours at each location, visit dekalbpublichealth.com or call 404-294-3700 for more information.
Anyone receiving a COVID or flu shot should bring their insurance information and photo ID. These vaccinations are generally available at no cost with most private insurance and Medicare. If you are not insured or your plan doesn’t cover the flu shot, it is available for a low cost. Depending on eligibility requirements, many may qualify or be eligible for limited vaccines at no charge. To see if your insurance plan is accepted or find out if you are eligible for a vaccination assistance program, please call DeKalb Public Health at 404-294-3700.
