Highlighting the Obesity Project and Nutrition Services for World Breastfeeding Week

DeKalb County Board of Health Highlights Obesity Project, Nutrition Services for World Breastfeeding Week in August

The DeKalb County Board of Health’s Women, Infants and Children program and Communities Putting Prevention to Work obesity initiative are joining forces to support breastfeeding.  This is in recognition of World Breastfeeding Week in Aug. 1 through 7.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) promotes breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding for the first year of life.  It offers information and support through registered dietitians, nutritionists and lactation consultants. A peer counselor program provides additional services to mothers enrolled in WIC.

As a part of its effort to improve nutrition, the Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) obesity project is supporting a new countywide policy.  This policy would foster a public environment that encourages breastfeeding as the cultural norm in infant feeding.

The DeKalb County Board of Health’s WIC program provides nutrition counseling and healthy foods to pregnant women, new mothers, infants and young children.  The Board of Health received federal CPPW funds in October 2010 to reduce obesity through improved nutrition and increased physical activity.

For more information, contact WIC at 404-508-7777 and CPPW at 404-508-7847.
