Tucker Middle School Hosts First Annual 5K Run/Walk to Fight Childhood Obesity

The Picture of Health Foundation,TuckerMiddle School, DeKalb County Board of Health and their partners will host a 5K walk/run and community health fair on Saturday, September 24, 2011.

The certified 5K run/walk begins atTuckerMiddle School, located at2160 Idlewood Roadin Tucker.  The run/walk is followed by a community health fair with diabetes, posture, blood pressure check and Body Mass Index screenings as well as health education on childhood obesity and secondhand smoke prevention. 

The event is being held in conjunction with National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month in September and learning the facts about obesity can help reduce the health problem.

  • More than 12.5 million children in theUnited Statesare overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  InGeorgia, 28,000 third graders are obese and 56,000 middle school students are obese. 
  • Obesity is a major challenge for both adults and youth inDeKalbCounty.  Twenty-four percent of adults and 13 percent of public-school students in the county are obese.  Further, 71 percent of adults and 80 percent of youth do not consume the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables, and 53 percent of adults and 65 percent of youth do not engage in the recommended levels of physical activity.

The family event includes a day of running/walking and learning how to live healthy.  Registration on the day of the event begins at 7:15 a.m. and the walk starts at 8 a.m. followed by the health fair at 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Picture of Health Foundation to fight childhood obesity. Pre-registration is $25 for adults and $30 the day of the race.  Students under 18 can register for $10.  For more information about the event, contact Picture of Health Foundation at 770-807-7813.

AIR QUALITY UPDATE 

Current weather models show that winds will begin to shift
from the east to the west after sunset on Wednesday.

Smoke from the BioLab facility fire in Rockdale County is predicted to settle towards the ground as it moves toward Atlanta. There is a high likelihood that people across Metro Atlanta will wake up on Thursday morning seeing haze and smelling chlorine.

Due to today’s worldwide cybersecurity outage, some services have been impacted.

  • You may experience delays reaching our Call Center, which handles health center appointments.
  • WIC benefit issuance is unavailable at this time. However, eWIC cards can still be used at authorized WIC vendors.


This outage has not only affected DeKalb Public Health, but other government and business services, in Georgia, throughout the nation and internationally.
